Preseason 2018

This year was our first big offseason training and project effort. We got funding from parents to create an offseason bot that tested out West Coast Drive, custom gearboxes, encoders, and more advanced mechanisms than we have done before. New students received training on the various tools (drill press, vertical / horizontal bandsaw, drills, etc) and a small group is being lead by one of our mentors, Anand, in more advanced machining (Manual and CNC mill). We had a lot of fun this season and are really happy with how trained and experienced even our new students are. A more detailed blog in google doc form can be found here. We have a great CAD team, and they have been trained throughout the year. They have experience making custom gearboxes, and have spent a lot of time sketching potential mechanisms to solve a problem. I will attach a bunch of pics.

Another day in the lab. We organized all the parts, wrote the part numbers on them, and marked them as completed or not on the robot spreadsheet. After misreading some of the parts, we sanded 4 2x1s wrong and will have to redo them tomorrow. The CNC is still pumping out the elevator parts, which is always exciting. The lathe was running once again and a lot more of the parts were created. The bellypan on one of the robots has to be redone since there was some metal caught in it so it didn’t make a secure hold. We should get our McMaster order tomorrow so we can really get some work done.

It was a pretty light day as a lot of people had a good amount of homework due tomorrow. We worked on putting the finishing touches on the carriage, and should be able to mount it once the plates are done. The pistons from automation direct should arrive Monday and we should be able to fully test the robot. The main thing we need to figure out is how to mount the sprockets for the 2nd stage chain run. We will manual mill them tomorrow and hopefully install them. I worked with Chloe on mounting the chain to the first stage by measuring out the hole pattern then bolting it to the carriage. We then attached the 4-40 bolts to secure it to the chain. We also installed the elevator gearbox, which unfortunately will require some of the electrical parts to be relocated which is a pain.

January 17th, 2018

Today we worked more on CAD, finalizing the elevator mounting positions. In the lab we worked on mounting the PEM nuts for securely fastening the electronics and it is looking quite good. We started to put the gearboxes together, and ran into minor issues w/ clearance but it thankfully fits with some work. We need to get stuff ordered, a couple parts are holding up our assembly.
